Blackbeard's Delight

It’s about that time of year for the annual escape to the woods, where we hole up with ungodly amounts of the three B’s: Booze, Books and Bacon. OK, more generally other fine meats and cheeses, but that didn’t fit the rhyme scheme. 

Anyway, one of the great joys of this getaway is the chance to unabashedly plow though books I’ve been meaning to read and re-read, some classic, some new. I’ve always got a running list, sometimes written down, others clicked-through on an Amazon Wish list, but I’ll always wind up wondering if there are more good books I should be bringing with for the trip. So, to cut to the chase, I’m looking for some book/graphic novel recommendations.

To give you an idea, here’s some of the books I’ve read at the compound in the woods in the last three trips: The River of Doubt, Hells Angels, Good Omens, Pistol, The Girls in the Office, Formerly Known as Justice League, X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills, Queen & Country: Operation Broken Ground, Hey Whipple, Squeeze This. 

As you can see things I’m into include sports, historic non-fiction, journalism (duh) and comics. If I’m honest I’m trying to read more fiction. So in addition to the usual non-fiction and comics (debating the ESPN book, also Superman for All Seasons): A Visit from the Goon Squad, Sag Harbor and How I Became a Famous Novelist.

I know I’m a terrible person for not reading the NYT Sunday Book Review, the NY Review of Books and The Millions more faithfully. Also, I know its ironic I’m looking for book picks given I wrote an article about a website that does such a thing.

Putting all that aside, I’d still like some recommendations. As you can see the reading list is clearly in flux, and it could be even fluxy-er with some good suggestions. If you’ve got some good picks put ‘em in the comments.
